Single Status Certificate in Malaysia: Application and Requirements

If you are a Malaysian citizen planning to get married overseas, apply for certain foreign immigration processes, or complete administrative requirements abroad, you may be asked to provide proof of your current marital status.

This document is commonly referred to as a Single Status Certificate, Marital Status Certificate, or Letter Verifying Marital Status.

At TEH & YU, we assist clients in understanding the relevant requirements, preparing supporting documents, and coordinating applications with the National Registration Department of Malaysia (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara, or JPN), where applicable.

What Is a Single Status Certificate?

A Single Status Certificate is an official confirmation of an individual’s marital status issued by JPN.

The document is commonly required by foreign government authorities to verify whether a Malaysian citizen is legally unmarried or has a particular marital status recorded by the relevant Malaysian authority.

Although commonly called a Single Status Certificate, the official document is referred to by JPN as a Marital Status Verification Letter.

For applications involving overseas use, JPN provides this service to non-Muslim Malaysian citizens.

When Do You Need a Single Status Certificate?

A letter confirming marital status may be required for several purposes, including:

  • Marriage overseas: When a Malaysian citizen intends to marry in another country.
  • Foreign marriage registration: Where the overseas authority requires evidence of marital status.
  • Immigration or visa applications: Where an authority requests official confirmation of marital status.
  • Remarriage following divorce: Where proof of the applicant’s current marital status is required.
  • Other administrative procedures: Where a foreign authority requires an official Malaysian document.

Requirements differ depending on the intended country and the receiving authority.

Documents Required for a Single Status Certificate

The documents may vary depending on whether the application is submitted personally, through a family representative, or through a lawyer.

For a personal application at JPN, the usual documents include:

  1. Original Malaysian identity card (MyKad).
  2. Copy of the intended spouse’s passport, where applicable.
  3. Statutory Declaration (AM80) confirming marital status and the purpose of the application.
  4. Any additional documents required by JPN.

Where an application is submitted through a lawyer, JPN specifies additional documentation, including the law firm’s covering letter, identification documents and appropriate letters of authorisation.

Additional supporting documents may be requested depending on the applicant’s circumstances.

How to Apply for a Single Status Certificate in Malaysia

Step 1: Confirm the requirements of the destination country

Before applying, check the requirements imposed by the relevant foreign marriage registrar, embassy, immigration department or other authority.

Step 2: Prepare the necessary documents

Identify and prepare the relevant identification documents, statutory declaration and supporting documents.

Step 3: Submit the application to JPN

An application may be submitted through the appropriate JPN office, or an authorised representative where permitted.

Step 4: Complete any additional authentication requirements

Depending on the country of use, the letter may require authentication, legalisation, translation or consular endorsement.

Step 5: Present the document to the relevant overseas authority

Once all applicable formalities have been completed, the document may be presented to the receiving authority, subject to its requirements.

How Long Is a Single Status Certificate Valid?

According to JPN, a Marital Status Verification Letter for overseas use is valid for six months from the date of issuance. Please note that this validity period is subject to change by JPN from time to time. For the latest requirements, kindly contact our office for further information.

However, a foreign authority may require a more recently issued document.

Applicants should check the receiving authority’s requirements before arranging the application.

Can You Apply While Living Overseas?

Depending on the circumstances, legal representation in Malaysia may also be available, subject to JPN’s requirements concerning authorisation and supporting documents.

It is advisable to establish the appropriate application method before arranging signatures or sending documents to Malaysia.

How Long Does the Application Take?

Processing times vary depending on document completeness, the relevant authority’s procedures and whether additional authentication or consular formalities are required.

Applications involving multiple authorities may require additional time.

For applicants who have a proposed wedding date or overseas submission deadline, early preparation is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for the Single Status Certificate myself?

Yes. Applicants may apply directly through the appropriate JPN office, subject to the relevant requirements.

Can I apply through a lawyer?

Yes. JPN provides a procedure for applications submitted through a lawyer, subject to the required authorisations and supporting documents.

Is a Single Status Certificate the same as a Statutory Declaration?

No. A statutory declaration is a declaration made by an individual, whereas the Marital Status Verification Letter is issued by JPN. The declaration may form part of the application requirements.
